What is the secret sauce to lead a high performing team? Some of the skills you need are obvious – good communication skills, emotional awareness blah blah blah. But some are not so obvious:
1. Don’t be afraid to actually lead. Most leaders fail because they avoid all healthy conflict in a quest to keep everyone happy. High performing teams are accountable, engaged and challenged – not happily chugging along in autopilot.
2. Empower people to make decisions for themselves – don’t do their job for them! If you step in and manage every problem, your people will grow to rely on you instead of themselves.
3. Get the right people on your team. All team members must be a good cultural fit and must deliver results, period. If they are not, support them to improve. But if they don’t meet the required standard quickly, find a better performer and move on. You can’t make a trail riding horse into a racehorse by feeding it or whipping it.
