$1.8 million judgment against an innocent woman. Data breaches are more dangerous than we first thought.
Sarah Luke is an Australian woman who was impacted by the Medibank data breach back in 2022, and didn’t think too much of it at the time.
However, as a result of the breach, hundreds of fraudulent transactions were made via her PayPal account, and she has now been sued for selling counterfeit goods online and ordered to pay $1.8 million dollars in damages to Adidas and $1.2 million to NBA.
Take a listen to our Partner Alex Martin’s interview with Radio 2CC’s Stephen Cenatiempo, where he discusses how Ms Luke was made aware of the orders against her, how the American courts can enforce this judgement, and the potential implications this has for Ms Luke in both Australia and the United States.
